What to Expect at Your First Meeting With a Financial Advisor

Nervous about sitting down with an advisor for the first time? Here is what actually happens in the first conversation, what to bring, and how to decide whether it is a good fit.

If you have never worked with a financial advisor, or you have and it did not feel right, the first meeting can feel like a big step. It helps to know what is actually going to happen. The short version: it is a conversation, not a sales pitch.

It starts with a conversation

The first meeting is primarily about listening. We want to learn about your goals, your current situation, your concerns, and what you would like help accomplishing. There is no script and no product to sell.

We will also explain how our process works, so you understand what working together would look like and can decide whether it makes sense for you.

You do not have to become a client

This is the part people are most relieved to hear. The initial conversation is designed to help both of us decide whether there is a good fit. There is no obligation to move forward, and the initial consultation is free.

If we believe we may be a good fit, we will clearly explain our fees and the services included before you make any decision.

What to bring

The most valuable thing you can bring is your questions. Beyond that, it can help to have a basic summary of any of the following, if you have it:

  • Your accounts, such as retirement accounts, brokerage accounts, and bank accounts
  • Your income and monthly expenses
  • Your insurance coverage
  • Your retirement goals, even if they are rough

Do not worry if you do not have everything prepared. We will guide you through the process, and a first conversation is useful even with only part of the picture.

What happens after you schedule

Once you book, you will receive a confirmation with the meeting details and any information we would like you to review beforehand. We will also explain what to expect, so you can arrive with your questions ready. If you reach out through the contact form or by phone, we typically respond within an hour during business days.

Not ready yet? That is fine too

Many people start by gathering information. If you are not sure you are ready to work with an advisor, you can still reach out. A conversation can help you understand your options and decide what, if anything, you want to do next.

How to tell whether it is a good fit

A good fit usually comes down to shared expectations about communication, services, fees, and the type of guidance you need. The first conversation is the right place to talk about all of those openly. If it is not the right match, we would rather say so and point you in a better direction.
